Farmer's Market Challenge - Romanesco

Img_1155

Inspired by the farmer's market challenges Florida Girl in DC always takes on, I took a chance on this alien.  I'm told it is called a romanesco and that it is sort of a cross between a cauliflower and broccoli.  The farmer described it as "nutty" which is how I feel people describe food when they have no idea what it tastes like.

No real clue what to do with it. We've done some roasted cauliflower and cauliflower gratin lately so I'm guessing that'll be the direction I take this bad boy in. Stay tuned...

Ha! I love it. Also, can't believe my misadventures at the farmers market inspired anything... but all I can say is, man, that is BOLD. Have u seen any recipes for it? #romanesco

Well, I failed miserably with the chestnuts - no chance this can turn out worse. Haven't looked for any recipes yet, but the texture is a lot like cauliflower so I think it will roast nicely. I hope.

Here is a recipe I found online much like one that I had prepared at a little local Italian Rest. here in South Tampa.
Blanch the florets in plenty of boiling, salted water until they just turn tender, and shock them in an ice bath to stop the cooking. Sauté sliced garlic and a bit of crushed red pepper flakes in olive oil. You can add a little tomato paste to the pan for an extra layer of flavor. Add the broccoli romanesco florets and sauté briefly, make sure the florets are well coated with olive oil, then toss everything with the al dente pasta and a splash of the pasta cooking water. Grate over Romano off the heat. It isn't often that something so weird looking becomes something so delicious.
